Safety is Everyone's Responsibility!

May 2009 Meeting Notes

May's meeting was hosted by the Incoming MSOL President, Ofc Paul Corcoran of the Lowell Police Department. The meeting was jam-packed with information pertaining to Officers health and well-being. Often, we become so accustomed to taking care of others that we neglect ourselves without really realizing the future impact. Susan Lavallee, RN of Saints Medical Center provided the Members with quick reminders of how to balance life - careers, family, spiritual, and physical. In the Merrimack Valley, Saints Medical Center has been a leader in taking the reigns and reaching out to many Police Departments in achieving healthy officers. Free seminars and clinics have been offered and numerous officers have participated. For additional information on any upcoming clinics or seminars (they are all FREE), please contact Susan at 978-458-1411.

Following Susan's presentation, Lt Thomas Greenhalgh of the Billerica Police Department spoke with the Members about the Critical Incident Stress Management Team of Greater Lowell. Many of the departments have similar organizations that are assigned to their regions, but the presentation gave officers a chance to really see and hear some of the examples of when the CISM Team would be activated. Lt Greenhalgh quoted - "That which cannot be put into words cannot be put to rest." (Unknown) - Sometimes, those incidents that we deal with may not be big to others, but may have a tremendous impact on ourselves.
